open source software written for Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh

“If you find a full open source operating system is not suitable for your business either because you need Windows compatibility or for any other reason we could still save you money through open source applications written to run natively on both Windows or Apple Macintosh computers.”

What is open source?

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software. Open source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open source software is available within the public domain. Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to user-generated content. The term open-source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free software. A report by Standish Group states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.

Not ready to fully commit to a new operating system?

If you are not ready to fully commit to a new operating system to replace windows either due to software requirements or training issues then you you can still make substantial savings with open source software. Certain elements of Linux Ubuntu are available on other platforms such as Microsoft Windows, see on this page FREE open source alternatives.

Best of Both Worlds

If you still need to run Windows on a day-to-day basis you can run side by side with Linux Ubuntu; the first option is to install Ubuntu in a "Dual Boot" configuration, this means that when you start your computer you will see a menu where you can choose which operating system you wish to boot into either Ubuntu or Windows. The second option is to install Virtual Box which is a FREE open source Virtual Machine which windows can be installed ins tide of, therefore enabling windows applications to be run right on the Ubuntu desktop within the VM. For more power hungry applications to be run in windows you should look at having the former method deployed although if this is not a requirement and you would prefer convenience of the two operating systems being used simultaneously then the latter configuration would be best.
